For the second year in a row, Baird Middle School 8th grade student members of Project Purple visited Chapin Street School to share the goal of this initiative.  As in past years the Ludlow Public Schools, in collaboration with Ludlow CARES, celebrates Red Ribbon Week with various activities, at each of the schools, with activities taking place during the week of October 24th-28th.The BMS students went to each classroom to read the book, The Red Ribbon: A Story of Hope by John Lasne. The overriding message of this book is about acceptance and helping each other.

The mission of Project Purple was also shared;  that they believe in making good choices, that every person deserves to grow up to be the awesome person they are meant to be and that each member has made a promise to make good choices when it comes to friendship, behavior and being drug-free. BMS students also led the Chapin street students in reciting the Red Ribbon Pledge (see video below).

The BMS students were accompanied by the Project Purple Advisor and BMS Health Teacher, Mrs. Deborah Casagrande, along with members from the DEA - Supervisory Special Agent Dan Pomeroy, Special Agent James Clifford, Intelligence Analyst Jennifer Fafard and Special Agent Scott Smith.

One of the highlights for the Chapin students was the opportunity to have lunch and recess with the BMS students.  “The Project Purple students were like Pied Pipers.... kids following them everywhere! It was great to see the positive interactions that took place,” commented Casagrande. “It was the perfect platform for the BMS students to continue the conversation about their message, in an informal setting.”

Baird Middle School Principal,  Mrs. Stacy Monette, shared, "Our Baird Middle School students enjoyed interacting with the Chapin students throughout the day.  These students are excellent examples of how getting involved with your school community can help you in making good decisions.”

Monette and Chapin Street Principal, Mrs. Nikki Reed, wanted to extend a thank you to Ludlow CARES for funding the bus that transported the BMS students to Chapin Street School, and to Casagrande for her help in coordinating the visit for the second year.

“I am thrilled that this collaborative activity has evolved into a yearly event," stated Reed.  “It is such a positive experience for all of the students involved; watching how engaged the 2nd and 3rd grade students were as the “big kids” is heartwarming. The Baird students are true role models. It is powerful when our students hear messages about healthy lifestyles and good choices from older students who they can relate to. Activities like this solidifies the importance of exposing our students to a variety of opportunities that can support positive lifelong decisions.”
