Baird Middle School Patriot Pen Coordinator, Mrs. Michelle D’Amore, was proud to share that Baird Middle School students captured three of the five spots in the recent district level (Hampden County) of the Patriot’s Pen contest. Congratulations to Aaron J. Little (grade 6) - 2nd place, Kaitlyn D. Rodrigues (grade 8) - 3rd place and Cam Daniel Smith (grade 8) - 4th place.

In the fall, BMS contestants were asked to submit a 300-400 word essay based on an annual patriotic theme which was first judged by their sponsoring VFW Post- The Sgt. Joshua D. Desforges VFW Post 3236 (Ludlow).  At this level, members of the VFW Post, under the leadership of  Eric Segundo, Director of Veterans Services for the Town of Ludlow, chose the top 10 essays. The top five post winners then moved on to the district level.

Patriot’s Pen is a nationwide youth-essay writing competition that gives students in grades 6, 7 and 8 the opportunity to write essays expressing their views on democracy. Nationally, more than 120,000 students participate in the contest. This year’s theme was The America I Believe In.
